The Choice Cook County Democrats Want to Deny Women

Like all grownups, even the least attentive, I enjoy watching the infantile games that liberals play. A current favorite is called “Race and Gender Don’t Matter” game. The rules are that candidates proclaim that their candidacy has nothing to do with the aforementioned immutable genetically inherited traits and then proceed to recite a laundry list of their supporters, neatly categorized by race, gender, ethnicity, and sexual preference.

The Super Bowl of the Race-Gender Olympics has been the ongoing back and forth between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, with color (no, not that kind of color!) commentators breathlessly predicting who will get the “female vote,” and who the “African-American” vote. That’s “vote,” singular. I guess that proves that don’t view their voters as members of groups. Instead, they view them as so incapable of individual thought that each racial, ethnic or gender category may as well be one voting entity.

Ordinarily I recoil against this sort of group-think, but in the spirit of the currently fashionable bipartisanship, as we approach the Illinois primary, I want to address this column to the voters of Cook County, but especially the female voters.

You need to pay attention, ladies.

If you doubt that, I have it on no less authority than Oprah herself. On a recent show, the Oprah discussed “The Gift of Fear,” a book that explains that we women often ignore our gut instincts at our peril. So, even if that charming guy you just started dating raises more red flags in your head than you’d see at a May Day rally in Havana, you tell yourself everything is terrific, which it is, until everything breaks bad, and you wake up in your own bed at 3 a.m. with Mr. Wonderful standing over you with a knife at your throat.

Fortunately, the woman in question in this story, who lived to tell it on “Oprah,” was able to escape. But Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and her two daughters Haley, 11 and Michaela, 17, were not so lucky last summer. After two vicious criminals broke into their Cheshire, Connecticut home, held them hostage and forced Jennifer, a 48 year-old nurse, to withdraw cash from her bank, they strangled her, tied the girls to their beds and set the house on fire. The girls died of smoke inhalation. Bill Petit, Jennifer’s husband of 22 years, had been severely beaten and tied up in the basement, but managed to survive.

Original news reports said that police had “rushed” to the scene, but on January 24, 2008, ABC News reported that while the two scumbags were terrorizing this family, a police officer was nearby for at least 30 minutes. The officer was forbidden to approach the house while the department decided where to set up the appropriate perimeter and otherwise comply with department policy, which apparently doesn’t include making sure innocent women and children don’t get murdered while the cops try to figure out what to do.

Coincidentally, on the same day that I read that learned that the Petit tragedy might have been prevented, I checked the status of the scheme being cooked up by two Cook county commissioners to disarm nearly all law-abiding citizens in the county, leaving us in the same situation as Jennifer Hawke-Petit. I know that it isn’t exactly breaking news that liberal Democrats want to turn self-reliant Americans into cowering supplicants, dependent on them for everything from health care to their very lives, but I never cease to be amazed by the arrogance of people like Cook County Commissioners Larry Suffredin (D-13) and William Beavers (D-4).

Suffredin is running for Cook county state’s attorney. From his commercials, you’d think his primary qualification for the job is that he’s tall and that he’s a “reformer,” as confirmed by that well-known reformer Jesse Jackson, Jr., who appears in one of . Suffredin’s ads. While he does mention that the NRA opposes him, he fails to mention why. I can say it simply: he is an enemy of freedom, a man who is contemptuous of the 2nd amendment, a demagogue who hopes to appeal to well-intentioned but uninformed voters who don’t realize that in a country where 48 states permit law-abiding citizens to own and carry firearms, it is gun grabbers like Suffredin who are, to borrow a favorite liberal phrase, “out of the mainstream.”

Beavers no doubt discovered the crime-preventing value of gun control by his experience on the south side of Chicago/ His , ill-conceived, dangerous ordinance has the deceptive and Orwellian name “The Safe Streets/Weapons Registration Act.” has nothing to do with safe streets and very little to do with registration of guns. It is in itself an affront to freedom.

One section requires registration “of all firearms in accordance with the provisions of this division.” Another prohibits registration of “ handguns, except “those validly registered to a current owner in the county prior to the effective date of this ordinance, and which contain each of the following——a safety mechanism to hinder the use of the handgun by unauthorized users. Such devices shall include, but shall not be limited to, trigger locks, combination handle locks, and solenoid use-limitation devices; and a load indicator device that provides reasonable warning to potential users such that even users unfamiliar with the weapon would be forewarned and would understand the nature of the warning.”’

Wait—what just happened?

What appeared to be an egregious gun-registration plan turned into gun confiscation. How? Unless your gun has the “load indicator,” which most don’t because no half-way intelligent gun owner would use to determine whether a firearm is loaded. Thus absent this, Beavers’ ordinance requires you to surrender it to your liberal betters. Suffredin’s racket is entitled the “Cook County Deadly Weapons Dealer Control Ordinance.” It would prohibit a gun shop from being located within 10 miles of another gun shop or within one mile of a school. Apparently democrats handwringing over lost jobs extends only to union auto workers or anyone who blames their unemployment on Wal-Mart. Law-abiding, small business owners and their employees’ jobs must be sacrificed at the altar of liberal fascism.

Not only are these ordinances bad public policy, and at odds with the U.S. Constitution, they probably violate the Illinois Constitution because home-rule municipalities have their own ordinances, which take priority over those of any county. (Art. VII, Sec. 6, Illinois State Constitution). Even those who aren’t concerned about 2nd amendment rights should ask themselves “do we really want to elect someone as the chief law enforcement official of the county who, at best does not know the law, or more likely, is willing to promote unconstitutional legislation when he perceives that it will be politically expedient?”

Good question. Beavers has apparently withdrawn the legislation. As we know liberals are relentless in their determination to control every aspect of our lives, so don’t be surprised if the legislation returns when he thinks he can sneak it in under the radar. Suffredin’s has been tabled until after the February 5 primary, after which he thinks he can safely proceed with his machinations. That’s something to think about when you cast your vote.

That episode of “Oprah” about women defending themselves against violent criminals had a take-home lesson. It is this: when confronting a dangerous miscreant who wants to do us harm, we need to listen to that little voice in our heads. Our intuition is a powerful weapon. I think that’s good advice, but personally, as a woman, I’d also like to have another weapon, one that fits nicely in my hand—one that would give me a fighting chance against someone who wants to rape or kill me.

Regardless of what Suffredin, Beavers and any other cabal of conniving politicians think is best for me, I want to exercise my God-given right to choose that weapon.

Misguided environmentalists actually hurting wildlife here

by Don Mallicoat

published January 24, 2008 12:15 am

The front-page article, “Development puts 10 WNC bird species in danger” (AC-T, Dec. 10), was reporting on the 2007 Watch List published by The Audubon Society and American Bird Conservancy including species such as the golden-winged warbler that require disturbance-dependent habitat for their survival. Development plays a role in the loss of habitat, but there is a larger culprit that needs to be addressed. First though, we need to connect the dots.

This Watch List is the third in a series of dots from the sponsoring organizations. The first dot was when the American Bird Conservancy issued a report in 2007 that named loss of early successional Eastern deciduous forest as we have in WNC as one of 20 Most Threatened Bird Habitats. Early successional habitat, or forest disturbance, is essential for the golden-winged warbler and others of the birds in danger.

Seeing a pattern

The second dot comes from the other sponsor of the Watch List, the National Audubon Society, which listed the ruffed grouse in its Top 20 Common Birds in Decline. Grouse numbers throughout their range are down 54 percent. What are the habitat needs of the ruffed grouse? They are birds of forest edges and need, you guessed it, early successional habitat. Am I the only one who sees a pattern to these dots?

It’s easy to blame rampant development and big corporations for loss of bird habitat. Yes, they are part of the problem with loss of habitat on private land. However, we have more than 1 million acres of national and state forest land in the region that should be able to compensate. We all enjoy the beauty of our mountain forests. So why isn’t there sufficient habitat there for these birds?

Here is where dot four comes in the form of a report commissioned by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and conducted by the highly regarded Pinchot Institute that certifies private forests for sustainability. The report was released in November and the most notable finding by the auditors was that the USFS is not cutting enough trees on our national forests. The audit states, “In all cases, harvests did not reach levels necessary to achieve a future condition reflecting their social, economic and ecological goals.”

So what does this last one have to do with bird habitat? Well, timber harvests are the primary tool of the USFS to establish early successional forest habitat. By most accounts, our national forests are about 1 percent early successional habitat when the goal is 10 percent. Closer to home, in a recent proposal to create wildlife habitat in the Shope Creek area of Pisgah National Forest northeast of Asheville, none of the forest in that area is currently early successional habitat. So how did our forests get in such a deplorable state for wildlife?

Not real conservationists

You can primarily thank environmental organizations, some locally headquartered, for that. Every time the Forest Service attempts to harvest hardwood timber from the national forests in the mountains, these groups, disguised as conservationists, use procedural appeals to stop the project. They recently appealed the Globe Project near Blowing Rock, where the USFS plans partial harvests on 1 percent of 11,000 acres. Their vocal protests were based on destroying the view from gated communities near Blowing Rock and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Is it too much to give 1 percent for wildlife habitat? Their misguided efforts depend on an uninformed populace to support their mantra, “Don’t cut the trees.”

Well guess what? You have to cut trees to establish early successional habitat for the golden-winged warbler, ruffed grouse, and other wildlife. Prescribed fire won’t do it, not in a hardwood forest.

Minnesota’s example

I had the opportunity to hunt in national forests in Minnesota this autumn. There are a lot of grouse. They also cut trees. These beautiful forests are a patchwork of diverse habitat. There is also varied recreational use. We routinely walked snowmobile, cross-country ski and hiking trails while hunting. The national forests in our mountains can similarly maintain their natural beauty while providing both wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities.

The dots are connected. Whether you enjoy the golden beauty of the warbler or thunderous explosion of the ruffed grouse, it is time for real conservationists to listen to the professionals in the Forest Service and Pinchot Institute when it comes to providing a home for wildlife. Preserving a renewable resource like trees to maintain a human vista at the expense of a home for wildlife is a losing position for those who enjoy our forests.

Help save the Joliet Training Area from closure.

Military, Law Enforcement, Hunters, and Others loose

http://sjtc.freeblogit.com/2008/03/01/support-petition-sign-up-here/

This blog is intended to serve as a communications portal in support of saving the U.S. Army Joliet Training Area (JTA) from closure.

For over 40 years, JTA has been utilized by Illinois personnel for military and Law Enforcement training. The property is the largest training facility in Illinois. It is currently under the control of FT. McCoy in Wisconsin, who has taken steps for the JTA to be placed on the Federal Excess Property List.

Real concern exists that this could result in permanent closure of the JTA and the loss of the property for future military and law enforcement training. As of January 1, 2008 - all training operations at JTA have been suspended.

Illinois troops are in danger of losing the largest training facility in Illinois and could be forced to travel outside of the state to accomplish their annual training mission objectives. In addition, closure of JTA will also take from local law enforcement personnel a facility that has been instrumental in their training.

Hundreds of civilian, retired and active military and law enforcement Sportsmen and women from Illinois have also had the privilege of utilizing the JTA for Sports Afield. If the JTA is closed, this privilege will be gone and lost will be one of the largest and most pristine natural resources available to sportsmen and women in north, central Illinois.

Join the efforts in urging Federal, State, Local and U.S. Army leaders to act now to prevent the closure and loss of the Joliet Training Area. Help and urge our leaders to remove JTA from the Federal Excess Property List. Help and urge our leaders to have the order that suspended training at JTA rescinded and allow Illinois troops to once again train in Illinois. Illinois troops deserve to have adequate training facilities within the state of Illinois. Closing JTA will force Illinois troops to train outside of Illinois.

Given the actions Ft. McCoy has taken, it is not understood how our leaders, with our country involved in a global war on terrorism and with an increasing need for advanced local law enforcement training, could consider closing a facility that trains troops, as well as federal, state and local law enforcement personnel from across north, central Illinois.

Your participation in this site in support of saving JTA is encouraged. Suggestions and updates are welcomed. Please do what you can to get the word out and feel welcomed to tell others about this sight and the importance of saving the US. Army Joliet Training Area.

NRA-ILA Alert -

Mayor Daley Unveils Gun Control Package in Illinois!

Please Contact Your State Representative and State Senator Today!

In the wake of the recent tragedy at Northern Illinois University, anti-gun extremists in Illinois and across the nation are working to exploit the horror felt by all at the senseless killing of five students. This week, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley (D) announced his annual push to restrict our Right to Keep and Bear Arms by conjuring up the image of the tragedy at NIU. "The tragic deaths at Northern Illinois last week are a fresh reminder," Daley stated, as he promoted efforts to ban countless semi-automatic firearms, .50 cal. Rifles, and ammunition (House Bill 4357 and Senate Bill 1912), implement a limit on the number of handguns an individual may lawfully purchase (House Bill 4393), and require ammunition serialization/encoding (House Bill’s 4259, 4269, and 4349), just to name a few of the proposals. Of course, none of these schemes would have had any impact on what happened at NIU. Even long-time anti-gun Illinois State Senator John Cullerton (D-6) "acknowledged that the newest legislation may not have prevented" the tragedy, reported the Chicago Tribune.

Daley's anti-gun assault will also include mandatory storage (House Bill 731), firearm dealer licensing (House Bill 4541 and Senate Bill 1919), a virtual ban on the private transfer of firearms (House Bill 758 and Senate Bill 2280), and a ban on magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds (House Bill 5169, as well as a provision of HB 4357 and SB 1912). This will likely be only the start of Daley's anti-gun shopping list. And how does Daley feel about law-abiding citizens who oppose these attacks on freedom? He likens them to common criminals, stating, "I know many people may not appreciate these proposals - especially the gang bangers, the drug dealers and the thugs who terrorize our neighborhoods with their weapons." Some of these proposals may be pushed through committees next week, while others could see action later.

At this time, it is critical that law-abiding gun owners in Illinois contact their State Representative and State Senator and urge them to oppose these attacks on the Second Amendment, especially considering they are being shamelessly promoted as a response to a crime none of them could have prevented.
