Bad news for WRP:

Realizing the importance of WRP to the “no net loss of wetlands” goal, the Bush Administration authorized for FY 2007 the WRP acreage cap at 250,000. This level restored WRP to the same authorization level mandated for FY 2007 in the 2002 Farm Bill. Recently the House Appropriations Committee voted to reduce FY 2007 WRP acreage to 144,000 acres.
Congressman Gil Gutknecht (MN) and Congressman Bennie Thompson (MS) introduced an amendment that would have allowed the full number of acres authorized by the Farm Bill to be enrolled in WRP. This amendment fell short by a vote of 235-185.
