ISP Offers its Open Range Program to Hunters

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP) announced today it will again offer its open range program for the purpose of sighting in shotguns for the upcoming deer season. On Saturday, November 4, the LaSalle firing range will be open to the public. On Saturday, November 11, firing ranges in Elgin, Joliet, DuQuoin, Macomb, Pecatonica, and Pawnee will be available to the public. Hours at all ranges are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Once again the Illinois State Police, in cooperation with Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR), will offer this program to hunters for the purpose of checking their shot guns before the upcoming hunting season. This annual program allows ISP and DNR firearm experts an opportunity to promote hunting safety in a secure environment while ensuring the safe and appropriate use of shotguns" said ISP Director Larry G. Trent.

"The range program is a collective effort of the IDNR and the State Police to promote safe, responsible use of firearms," said Sam Flood, Acting Director of the IDNR. "Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-time hunter, this program provides a good opportunity for hunters to check their shotgun in the presence of an expert before the beginning of the season. This will not only ensure their safety, but the safety of other sportsmen on the field."

The public is asked to call one of the ranges listed below before the scheduled date to make a reservation. Targets will be provided and there is no charge for use of the range. Participants must possess a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card and transport the firearm legally by having it unloaded and enclosed in a case.
