You Can Help Illinois Dream Hunt:
The Illinois Bowhunters Society and Illinois DNR will hold their fourth annual Dream Hunt for 12 terminally ill or disabled youths/young adults Oct. 27-29 at Sahara Woods near Carrier Mills in southern Illinois.
IBS members will be guides, and the special youth hunters will be coming from all over the United Special Sportsman Alliance, said Brigid O'Donoghue, USSA President and Founder, who is reachable at (715) 884-2256 or by e-mail at biotec@ceas.coop. There also is a Web site, www.childswish.com.
"This hunt is a request by these less fortunate kids with little time left to enjoy the outdoors," said the IBS' Todd Hewing. "The opportunities we take for granted may likely never have been possible for many of these kids. We can at least brighten up one weekend. But "here's the problem, most are in wheelchairs, their families maxed out with medical and other special need expenses and these kids need our help," he added. "I am asking everyone to sit down and write a check to USSA, in care of Jim McFarlane, 2528 Ellen Ave., Rockford, IL 61101.
"Jim has adopted this program and has nearly single-handedly, with a few volunteers, pulled this off the past couple of years and we need to help him out."
Said McFarlane: "We have 10 veteran volunteers of past Dream Hunts and then Lynn, and a gentleman who is a hunter safety instructor is joining us this year for the first time. We have 12 kids from 11 different states, with six of them being in wheelchairs or limited mobility. Our kids range in age from nine to one adult of 26 years old.
"One boy from Kentucky wants to go out hunting with an 11-year-old girl from Wisconsin who wants to shoot a deer for him. Both of these kids share a common brain cancer and communicate with hundreds of miles between them to try to share common things that keep them going."
Donations will be used for 20 plus motel rooms for three days, meals and other expenses, McFarlane said.
